well there's several options, i'll post the 3 most used
java
there are a couple of servers around, where you can play catan by just opening a webpage (provided that you have java installed)... it will automatically download a java script that will run the game on your PC... quite simple actually and by far the most used... you can play alone against robots or find 3 other human players, you can even join a competition (ladder)... the ladder players use their own rules tho (no trading, no robbing, etc), so make sure you read their rules first
here are all the sites where you can play java-catan:
http://catan.jsettlers.com/ (slow old java) http://catan2.jsettlers.com/ (fast new java) http://www.blueplanetsoftware.com/catan (jsettlers mirror) http://www.settlers.servegame.com (newman server) http://www.catanweb.com/ (xplorers) http://games.asobrain.com/ (xplorers) http://www.playbutton.nl/jsettlers_v1_3 http://hoopes.hn.org/settlers/ (with stats)
http://settlers.cs.northwestern.edu (old)
flash
i've only found one so far, probly coz this is brand new, heheh... those who made this, did a very fine job... you can play with 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 players, the board stays the same tho (5-6 player board, not the standard 3-4), and it would be great if this could be changed in the near future... same as java, you dont need to download or install anything (provided that you have macromedia flash installed), just go to the website and join one of the servers

wancatan
i dont like this very much, its complicated, not very user friendly and difficult to install, but the people playing it are very friendly and helpfull... it would be nice if someone could update the code and the installer a little... they do offer some in return tho, you can play virtually all variants of the game: seafarers, starfarers, cities&knights, etc
http://www.wannagame.com/settlers-of-catan
msn
microsoft is working on a version for MSN (a chat program like AOL, ICQ or IRC)... but theyre probly gonna charge people for playing it

Greetings,
I play Catan a lot IRL, but just got to know the online variants, so I'm quite a newbie. I tried the Java Catans, but I don't like them much, because it's so...hm, oversimplified. And bots are rolling dices and building stuff waay too fast. Another thing happened to me twice (I played only twice actually for about 5 minutes): I didn't get all the sources I needed to get from my starting positions. WTF?
I got a feeling that WanCatan is friendlier to the eye, but I can't find an english page with players for WanCatan. All sites are in dutch. Can you help me?

This is kind of way way off in the future but Capcom is doing a version of Catan on the Nokia N-gage. They haven't said much about it so far except for a few unofficial screenshots ( http://www.n-page.de/screens.php?typ=news&code=1093282075&shot=1 ).
However, all their recent games have been online or had online elements. Pocket Kingdom (a MMO) and Pathway to Glory (a turn based strategy) are totally online so it's possible they'll do Catan as an online game too.

Ohhh, I wish. You obviously haven't been stuck on a train delayed by an hour and a half.
I've been on a train delayed by 9 hours because a tree fell on the line and they had to go all the way back to Edinburgh to go down another route, and the conductor very nicely decided to get drunk about 6 hours into the epic journey that was only supposed to last 2 hours. He started singing to us over the intercom
Getting back to the game, I think they might make an optional shorter version if it was going to be online (they still haven't said!). They have an online golf sim called Tiger Woods which lets you play just 3 holes instead of 18 in live online matches.
I guess another thing you could do is what they do in Tiger Woods when a player leaves a match: "tough luck, you lose if you drop out", and the remaining players continue. They might have to fiddle about with the rules a bit though to take account of one player not doing anything.

If you're searching for a Settlers game and site in the English language, try http://catan.asobrain.com This site offers a new java Settlers of Catan game (named Xplorers) including Cities and Knights, Seafarers, ranking and AI.
